Homemade wine question (another)?

okay so ive made a few batches and then remembered hearing about how you can go blind from homemaking it. Is that just if you try distilling it because all im doing is the basic wine making of putting fruit sugar water and yeast in a bottle with balloon on top etc. and letting it sit. any info?
